When shopping for a mattress, you might often misjudge the size and order an option that is either too big or too small.

While it may sound like a seemingly innocent mistake, it has some serious consequences. For starters, the brand may not allow you to replace the mattress or seek refunds, in which case, you’ll be stuck with the wrong-sized mattress. Even if it does, the process of getting a replacement can be a hassle.

Besides, if you choose not to return it and keep sleeping on the wrong-sized mattress, you may eventually develop back and neck problems. That’s why in this guide, we have presented the most common mattress sizes in the United States. So, if you have trouble determining mattress sizes, then keep reading!

What Are The Different Mattress Sizes In The United States?

There are several mattress sizes available in the US today. And the most commonly used sizes have been discussed below.

1. Twin Mattress

Size: 38 inches x 75 inches

Among all the standard mattress sizes available today, the twin-size mattress is the smallest. It measures 38 inches wide and 75 inches long, which makes it suitable for single sleepers.

Twin-size mattresses require a room that is at least 7 feet by 10 feet in size. If you have furniture, such as desks and dressers, the room size needs to be larger to accommodate it.

That said, twin mattresses are perfect for children’s rooms, bunk beds, and small bedrooms that have twin-size beds. Full-sized adults may face difficulty sleeping on this mattress.

2. Twin XL Mattress

Size: 38 inches x 80 inches

Measuring 38 inches wide and 80 inches long, the twin XL mattress is a slightly upgraded form of the twin-size mattress. Since it is comparatively longer than the twin mattress, it is more suitable for full-built adults. But with the same width, it cannot accommodate more than one sleeper.

Twin XL mattresses require a minimum room size of 8 feet by 10 feet to fit naturally. Thankfully, with the narrower width, you get more lateral space in your room for additional furniture. It is best suited for rooms that have limited space, such as studio apartments.

3. Full Mattress

Size: 54 inches x 75 inches

The full-size mattress is 54 inches wide, which makes it spacious enough to accommodate two people at once. However, its length is only 75 inches, due to which it might not be suitable for tall adults.

On that note, its length is perfect for growing children or teenagers. Ideally, it should be used on a full bed shared by siblings who have grown out of their twin beds. It is also great for young adults who often need to move from home to a new apartment.

Normally, to fit a full-size mattress, you need a room that is at least 9.5 feet by 10.5 feet in size.

4. Full XL Mattress

Size: 54 inches x 80 inches

The full XL mattress is 5 inches longer than the regular full-size mattress. Because of this, it is a good choice for fully grown adults who share the same bed. However, the width of the mattress is still 54 inches, which provides little room for spreading out.

With that being said, it is a suitable mattress for couples who like to cuddle. Similarly, it can be used as a single mattress by sleepers who have bulkier bodies. It can also be used by single sleepers who change their positions or move around a lot while sleeping.

As for the room size, you need to make sure that it is at least 9.5 feet by 11 feet in size, or else you will have trouble fitting the mattress.

5. Queen Mattress

Size: 60 inches x 80 inches

The queen-size mattress is one of the most popular mattress sizes among US consumers, thanks to its size and price point. It is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, which means that it offers ample space for two fully-grown adults. And it is not as expensive either.

Queen-size mattresses require a room that has a minimum size of 10 feet by 10 feet. It is usually fitted in the main bedroom of a house that is large enough to fit other furniture, such as desks and dressers. In most cases, the queen bed is best suited for couples who like to spread out a little bit while sleeping.

6. King Mattress

Size: 76 inches x 80 inches

The king-size mattress is a relatively large mattress that measures 76 inches in width and 80 inches in length. Compared to the queen-size mattress, it is slightly expensive to purchase, but on the flip side, you get a lot more space to move around.

Alternatively, you can get the standard king-size bed if you place two of these twin XL mattresses side by side. This is possible due to its width being exactly double that of a twin XL bed. And because of its larger size, it requires a room that is at least 12 feet by 12 feet in size.

Traditionally, it is used in large master bedrooms and can accommodate two fully grown adults and a child (or a pet, if you have one).

7. California King Mattress

Size: 72 inches x 84 inches

The California king-size mattress is typically 4 inches longer than the standard king-size mattress. This makes it an ideal option for people who are more than 6 feet tall. On the other hand, it is four inches narrower than the king size mattress, which slightly reduces the lateral space available. Even then, it’s wide enough to accommodate two fully grown adults and a child.

California king mattresses require a minimum room size of 12 feet by 12 feet, which is the same as that of regular king-size beds. Thanks to its narrower profile, you get more space in the room to fit extra furniture.

Bed and Mattress Sizes Vary Between Countries

If you want to replace a worn out and old mattress on your King size bed, let's say you need a new mattress. Don't just buy another 'King size' mattress. Be sure to check the dimensions because mattress and bed sizes vary from country to country - and even from manufacturer to manufacturer. King-size mattresses made outside of your own country might not have the same dimensions as the one you are replacing.

Bed Sizes

The standard King Size mattress in the USA measures 76" wide by 80" long (193 cm x 203 cm). In Australia, a King measures 72" x 80" (183 cm x 203 cm), while in the UK and Ireland, it measures 60" x 78" (152 cm x 198 cm). It is important to check the dimensions of your Kingsize mattress and to make sure it fits your Kingsize bed even though you can use the term 'King' in general terms.

Other Mattress Sizes In The United States

In this section, we have discussed some uncommon mattress sizes that are available in the country.

1. Crib Mattress

Size: 28 inches x 52 inches

This mattress is used in a baby’s crib, which typically measures 6 feet by 4 feet in size. It is very small in size so that it can easily fit inside the crib. Also, as per regulations, the mattress should be less than 6 inches thick to avoid problems for the baby.

2. Small Single Mattress

Size: 30 inches x 75 inches

The dimensions of the small single mattress make it a good choice for those who have a single child. As you can see, it is comparatively narrower than the twin bed, which gives you a lot more room for furniture and other things.

3. Olympic Queen Mattress

Size: 66 inches x 80 inches

Compared to a standard queen-size bed, the Olympic queen mattress is almost 6 inches wider, which means you get more space to move around. However, the wider profile means that the amount of free space you get inside the room decreases, which is something to keep in mind before buying this mattress.

4. Alaskan King Mattress

Size: 108 inches x 108 inches

One of the largest mattress sizes available in the US, the Alaskan king bed measures a whopping 108 inches in both length and width. It can easily accommodate multiple adults, as well as kids and pets. That said, its gigantic size and square profile require a large room that is at least 14 feet by 14 feet in size.
