To enhance indoor air quality, Underwriters Laboratories' environmental division developed the GREENGUARD program, which identifies interior products with minimal chemical emissions. GREENGUARD Gold is the most stringent certification provided by UL, acknowledging products that are safe for use by sensitive populations such as children and the elderly. Products are evaluated in specialized environmental chambers for prolonged periods, taking into account the user's lifetime exposure. The UL SPOT Sustainable Product database provides a list of GREENGUARD-approved items.
GREENGUARD Gold mattresses are subject to testing and recertification every 90 days.
While the GREENGUARD Gold label provides confidence that a product is safe for extended usage, it has its limitations. The certification does not take into account the sourcing and processing of the raw materials or necessitate that the materials used be organic.
