Forest Stewardship Council

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) was established to promote sustainable forestry practices and provide guidelines for forest operators and manufacturers to market sustainable products to consumers.

Mattresses bearing the FSC label often also have a Rainforest Alliance Certified™ label, as the Rainforest Alliance is an approved certifier for FSC. Control Union Certifications is another independent certifier for multiple programs.

There are two categories of FSC certification:

1. FSC-certified natural latex used in a finished mattressThis certification guarantees that the natural latex used in the mattress comes from an FSC-approved source that follows sustainable and ethical practices.
2. FSC Chain of Custody certificationThis certification applies to manufacturers who use FSC-approved natural latex as part of a finished mattress that also contains other materials. The business must identify and separate certified and controlled materials from non-certified and non-controlled materials throughout their journey through the supply chain.

If a mattress has the FSC Chain of Custody label, it means that the natural latex used in the finished product has been sourced sustainably and has been tracked from the forest to your home. However, this label does not guarantee organic production or provide information about how the other materials in the mattress were sourced.
