Eco-INSTITUT is a German organization, registered as a GmbH, that provides testing criteria and equipment for a range of products, including construction materials, floor coverings, mattresses and bedding goods, furniture and furnishings. To meet Eco-INSTITUT's standards, products must comply with the German indoor air guide values RW1 for toxic emissions and must not contain biocides like moth repellents or non-certified tropical wood.
For a brand to receive the Eco-INSTITUT label, they must provide a complete list of materials used in the product. The product is then tested in a specialized chamber for a duration of 24 hours to 7 days, depending on the substance being tested. A report is produced, outlining the emissions over time and indicating whether or not the product qualifies for the label.
